Learning lifestyle interviews: Studs Terkel & keeping it real

Just picked-up Terkel’s American Dreams: Lost and Found. It’s addictive & reminds me why conversation is so damned enriching.

Studs brings a respectful awareness & comfort to each conversation that creates a confidence & focus in his interview subjects – what my cousin Jeff calls “Keepin’ it real”.

When discussing interview styles today, my husband Sean disagreed with one of my lessons learned per recent experience at ConvergeSouth e.g. ‘don’t over affiliate with the interview subject’. He said approaching an interview with too much formality and distance broaches mainstream media (stiff journalism).

So next stop in interview land…:
Relax & let the interview build like a regular conversation — off of shared passion for the topic.
